Bonnie A. Harken, AIA, is President of Nautilus International Development Consulting, Inc., a multi-disciplinary firm which consults for government agencies and private businesses about strategies for planning and implementing successful, sustainable developments. Founded in 2003 and located in New York City, Nautilus has worked in over 25 countries. Its special strength is the development of resilient urban waterfronts. Nautilus International worked recently with the Battery Park City Authority on resiliency projects and advised them on the urban design of connections between Battery Park, Wagner Park and the Museum of Jewish Heritage, as well as overseeing proposals for restoration of adjacent aquatic habitats. The firm also recently completed an award-winning Comprehensive Plan to help the Village of Haverstraw become a climate-smart community taking full advantage of its waterfront along the Hudson River. Nautilus consulted for many years with the World Water Council on the role of water resources in “green growth” for developing countries experiencing rapid urbanization and economic development, and published a chapter in UNESCO’s publication on Water Security and the Sustainable Development Goals summarizing the interconnections between green growth and water security. Ms. Harken is currently co-chair of the Waterfront Committee of the NYMetro Chapter of the American Planning Association.
